In a battle between evil and Honeybun, tall red and sexy will always win.

Alfric and Pleasance are getting married on the romantic and beautiful island of O’ahu! Or are they? Violence in the rainforest has a way of upsetting even the best laid plans. And when that violence comes a little too close to home…the brothers might need to exchange their lei for a slightly more deadly form of body ornament. Invasion, war and centuries of the best and worst nature can hand them…Hawaii’s overcome it all. But the people of the beautiful islands have never experienced the Honeybuns. That’s a whole new kind of natural event!

If they stood very still, the sounds of the rainforest were like a soundtrack. Nature’s music swelled and faded around them, filled with the chorus of life that throbbed just beneath the surface everywhere they walked. It would have been easy to lose the song in the chaos of astounding visuals, but Alf Honeybun was determined to not only hear its magical tune, but to infuse it into his cells. Never to be forgotten.

“This probably isn’t the first jungle-type place you’ve been in,” Pleasance said with a grin.

“No. But it feels like the first. I never really experienced the last one, what with all the shooting and blood curdling screams of agony.”

They stood at the top of a rocky bluff, looking out over the dense green of an O’ahu rainforest. Behind them, the narrow path they’d hiked to gain the top wound back down, an unwelcome reminder that they couldn’t stay there forever.

“It’s so impossibly beautiful up here.” Pleasance frowned. “I should have brought my sketch book.”

Alf wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her close, nuzzling her thick fall of black hair. She smelled like the fresh flowers in her lei. Since they’d arrived on the island, he’d bought her a new one every morning. Once they were married and went back home, Alf was determined to have a lei made up for every anniversary. To bring back a taste of the pre-wedding honeymoon they’d been enjoying. “We’ll come back tomorrow. You can draw for as long as you want.”

She turned as he kissed her cheek. “What will you do while I sketch?”

“Navel gaze. I suspect there are many mysteries and conundrums in my navel. I’ve never had time to consider them all. It’ll be cathartic.”

She laughed, a throaty sound that made Alf’s body tighten with need. “So much drama in something so small.”

He winced. “Ouch! Be careful what you’re callin’ small, woman.”

She leaned into him, sliding her long fingers through his auburn hair. He’d let it grow over the last weeks and found himself enjoying the change. For one thing, Pleasance ran her fingers through it more often, and, coupled with the sand, sun and beauty of Hawaii, it made him free and happy in a way he hadn’t been since he was a kid.

The thoughts flitted through Alf’s mind in a flash. But all reflection disappeared as Pleasance’s soft lips found his. Heat flared from the spot where they touched and spiraled downward, swamping him with instant need. Alf wrapped himself around her and deepened the kiss, letting his tongue slide through to tangle with hers.

Pleasance’s soft body molded to his. Her delectable scent encompassed him, driving desire a notch higher. When she made a soft sound of pleasure, need flashed into lust like a spark to a flame. Alf pressed her backward, intending to ease her down onto the blanket and transform their kiss into something much deeper.

He never got the chance. In the distance, a blood curdling scream disturbed the natural peace, ripping them brutally from the moment.

All Hoale-ows Eve by Declan Sands

allhoale-owseve

A Hoaley Addictive Halloween!

Adam and the gang are just out for a fun night of trick or treating when a dirty devil plows into Mink and leaves a surprise in his candy bag. Next thing they know, Mink’s in jail and they’re hunting for an international jewel thief named Monkey. Will the trail of tricks end in treats for everyone involved? Or will they all end up with egg on their faces and TP on their shoes? There’s only one way to find out!

heart

Mink stumbled over his cape and nearly pitched face first into a water-filled ditch at the side of the road. Clinking like the tin man, Delf grabbed hold of Mink’s pitchfork and kept him almost upright. His overflowing bag of candy tipped dangerously, causing Mink to shriek in a decidedly unmanly way.

Adam lifted the patch off his right eye and peered out from underneath it. “Avast ye, matey. Ye’re ballast appears to be unbalanced.” The sound-activated parrot on Adam’s shoulder squawked, causing Maddy to jump and shriek. “Good god, Ads!” I swear I’m gonna pinch that parrot’s head off before the night’s over.”

Mink slammed the bulging bag against his chest, turning a fiery red face in Adam’s direction. “You’d better watch the talk about my ballast, Ads.” He grinned widely, his teeth nearly glowing white against the cherry red of his face. “Delfie likes my ballast, don’t you honeybuns?”

The giant, red-haired knight of the round, or square, table, Adam wasn’t entirely sure, lifted a creaky arm and shoved the hunk of metal covering his handsome face upward. “You’re lucky if I can find your ballast wearing this outfit,” he groused.

“I think you might have enough candy Minks.” Adam lifted his own, much less bulky bag. “You have easily four times what the rest of us do.”

Dressed as Wonder Woman, Maddy adjusted her fake boobs and cocked a padded hip, her mink-brown pageboy dancing under a sparkling gold lame headband. “That’s because everybody can tell we’re adults and they all think he’s a child.”

Mink frowned in her direction, looking a little scary since he had horns and a pitchfork. “I beg your pardon. They’re more generous with me because I’m so damn loveable. You…” he swung an accusing finger over his three friends. “You’re all cranky. Nobody wants to give candy to a bunch of sour pusses.”

Adam gave up on the patch and tugged it up to his forehead. “Sorry to burst your bubble Suzie Sunshine, but they’re shoving candy into your bag as fast as they can because Delf’s always standing behind you looking like he’s going to run them through with his staff.”

Mink’s eyebrows danced and he twirled an invisible mustache between his fingertips, using his best Groucho Marx voice, “I’d like him to run me through with that staff, yuk, yuk.”

Delf’s armor shimmied and Adam decided he was either having a seizure or he was laughing. There was no way to know for sure because his handsome mug was completely obscured by metal.

“Whatever. Wonder Woman’s feet are tired. I’m heading back to the bar.”

Mink crossed his arms over his chest, looking demonic until he stabbed himself in the cheek with his pitchfork. “Ow! Spoil sport.”

Delf clanked. “She’s right, gumdrop, we’ve been out here for hours. I think you’ve done enough damage.”
Sighing, Mink nodded. “Okay, but don’t come running to me when you run out of candy. You’re not getting any of mine.”

Turning toward the flashing neon sign of the distant bar where they’d started the night’s adventure, Adam threw an arm over Maddy’s shoulders and kissed her cheek. “I’m really glad you’re back, Mads. I’ve missed you.”

She lay her head on his shoulder, sighing. “Me too.”

The sidewalks were full ahead of them and some of the celebrants were getting a little rowdy. The crowd shifted suddenly, somebody giving a little scream as they were shoved aside.

“Hey, you poked me with that thing!” a woman shouted.

Mink chuckled. “That’s what he said.”

Delf clanked in response.

A wiry figure dressed all in red shoved free of the crowd, running down the street right at them. He kept looking over his shoulder as more shouts rose up behind him.

“What’s going on?” Maddy asked.

Adam shook his head. “Looks like somebody got too much into the spirit of his costume.”

The devil running toward them looked enough like Mink that Maddy and Adam both turned to make sure he was still behind them.

“Minks, looks like one of your people is up to no good.”

Mink opened his mouth to respond just as the devil runner stepped off the sidewalk and seemed to stumble, pitching forward and slamming into Mink. The two devils went down in a pile of horns and pitchforks and there was some unattractive rolling around and grunting.

Delf was concerned enough to tug off his helmet. “Hey, watch out.” He reached an enormous paw toward the topmost devil and hesitated. It was nearly impossible to tell which one was Mink.

Adam waded in, grabbing hold of the devil on the top and pulling him carefully to his feet. “When he was looking into the guy’s face he could easily tell it wasn’t Mink. The newcomer’s face was slender with high cheek bones and his lips were plumper than Mink’s. “Are you okay?”

The guy nodded, sending a quick look over his shoulder.

“Look what you did to my candy!” Mink was scrambling around picking up candy from the wet, dirty street. “It’s gonna be ruined!” he whined.

“Here let me help.” The other devil dropped to his knees and grabbed Mink’s bag, shoving handfuls of candy back into it. “I’m so sorry, man.”

The invading devil dropped the last handful of candy into the bag and pressed it toward Mink, pushing to his feet. “I gotta go. Sorry about the mishap.” He took off running, disappearing into an alley just as four guys in suits with guns drawn shoved free of the melee in front of the bar and pounded toward them.

“Oh crap,” Adam said. He pointed toward the alley. “He went that-a-way…”

The big guys pushed Delf aside and he stumbled backward, sounding like a tin roof in a hail storm. One of the men tackled Mink to the ground, clamping cuffs on him before Adam’s parrot could shriek, “Avast ye, maties” into the chilly night.

heart

She looked at the dead man’s name badge and swore. Brita thought she was looking at the uni who was supposed to have been at the front desk.

She moved to the window and looked outside, seeing the rusty metal fire escape hugging the wall a few feet down.

The killer had used the fire escape.

She left the bathroom and hurried toward the stairs, Moxie bouncing at her heels. She’d heard voices on her way upstairs so she knew that somebody was in the bullpen. First she needed to warn them, though she thought the killer was long gone. And second she needed to start a manhunt for whoever killed the Sarge and Brent Madris, the young uniformed cop in the bathroom. Madris had left behind a wife and two small kids. Rage flared at the thought. Brita would find whoever killed the two cops and she would make sure they paid for it.

Moxie ran to the bullpen door and stopped, yipping with excitement. Brita scooped her up and pushed the door open.

The stench hit her first. Feces, urine, and fear.

The first cop was draped over the copy machine, the whir and click of the copier a constant accompaniment to the flash of light each time the machine took another copy of whatever Detective Red Gordyn was lying on. Pieces of copy paper floated from the tray and scattered like flower petals across the already littered floor.

Alarm flashed through Brita, sending her senses into overdrive. The copier’s constant drudgery sharpened until it was like the roar of a train in her mind, each click at the end of the copy cycle twanging across her nerves like the cocking of a loaded pistol.

She searched for a pulse, finding one that was very faint. She would call for an ambulance but first she needed to finish securing the scene.

She settled Moxie onto the floor by her feet. “Heel,” she ordered in a harsh whisper. The doxie trembled, her frilly tail drooping on the floor behind her. Even Moxie’s overblown sense of adventure seemed to be outraged by the carnage in the station.

Brita crouched low and moved quickly past the first row of desks. She peered under each scarred wooden desk before moving on to the next and then the next. She found the second body lying face down between two desks. His desk chair was overturned behind him, the rusted wheel still spinning. She felt for a pulse on Detective Bill Bris’s throat but knew it was no use.

His slightly bulging brown eyes stared sightlessly ahead, a trail of blood coating the bridge of his pug nose from the hole between his eyes.

She found no more bodies and, by the time she reached the door to the interview rooms at the back, she was finally able to breathe.

Brita started to dial nine-one-one. As her finger hovered over the last digit, Moxie suddenly shot sideways with a growl and Brita turned. The little dog yelped.

“Moxie?”

Movement to her left. A blur of motion. Then Brita’s head snapped sideways and pain shattered outward, bringing her to her knees on the hard, dirty carpet.

She never felt her face hitting the floor.

Pauline, Night Owl Reviews!

“Sam Cheever delivers a fantastic modern day love story in this sweet and steamy offering. The witty banter and the comfortable rapport between the hero and heroine had me feeling that they belonged together.”

~~*~~

The moon was just visible, fat and round, above the tree line. A soft breeze wafted across Bliss’ face as she stood in the yard and watched Brad throw a tennis ball for the largest dog. He was a beauty. Massive and muscular, with cream and gray fur and one blue eye. Bliss wondered what kind of dog he was.

Around him skittered the three smaller dogs, which, though barely bigger than her snow boots, had personalities that seemed every bit as big as their massive brother. They took turns snagging the tennis ball away from the dog Brad called Mixxer and running off with it, ears flying, stumpy legs pumping, and long tails trailing out behind them as they dodged and ducked and totally outmaneuvered the much bigger dog. Before she realized what she was doing, she found herself laughing at their antics.

Suddenly she realized she was almost enjoying herself, despite the fact that she was outside, dressed like a refugee from a natural disaster, with dirt and grass under her shoes and bugs buzzing threateningly around her head. She kept an eagle eye on the buzzing monsters, determined to keep them away from her virgin skin. Brad had given her a small, blue fan with bug repellent inside and she was frantically waving it around her body, warding off any bug that was ballsy or hungry enough to make a run at her despite the repellent-filled air she blew at them.

Bliss momentarily forgot her protective efforts when Sissy suddenly broke away from the pack and flew toward her, ears flying and tongue lolling. She knelt down to pet the tiny dog and immediately felt the sting of something on her arm. With a squeal of alarm, Bliss slapped at it and grimaced as her hand came away coated with something that looked suspiciously like legs. “Argh! Bleck!”

A clean, white rectangle appeared before her face. “Use this. Mosquitoes are one of the downsides of country living I’m afraid.”

Bliss looked up into his bright green eyes and felt a clunk somewhere in the vicinity of her stomach. His warm, yummy smell enveloped her, pushing away all thoughts of bugs and things that go buzz in the night.

Oh yeah, she had it bad. “Thanks.”

Bliss swiped bug guts off her hand and arm and tried to give the handkerchief back to him.

He shook his head. “Keep it until we get back. You might need it again.”

She grimaced but nodded. Tiny paws hit her calves and she glared down at Sissy. “It’s all your fault I got bitten. If I hadn’t been looking at how cute you were running over to me I would have headed that one off.”

The little dog’s tail drooped, tucking tightly between her legs, and she whimpered.

Bliss’ eyes widened. “Oh my god! I was just teasing. Why does it look so sad?”

Brad reached down and plucked Sissy off the ground, handing her to Bliss without warning. “Dogs are very sensitive to tone of voice, Bliss. And they don’t recognize sarcasm.”

Bliss clamped the little creature to her chest with both arms, holding her so tightly Sissy squeaked in alarm. “I-I don’t know how to hold it.”

Brad touched her arm. “It’s okay, you don’t have to hold her so tightly, just relax and she’ll snuggle in.”

Bliss forced her muscles to unclench and the little dog gave her a kiss on the nose in response, then she settled down in Bliss’ arms, one fat little leg drooping limply over her forearm as she settled her head in the crook of Bliss’ elbow with a soft sigh.

“Shall we take a walk?”

Bliss nodded, her brown eyes wide. She was sure she’d fall and drop the little creature that lay so trusting in her arms. But she followed Brad and the other dogs as they headed toward the side yard, where a wide, vegetation-free path began at the edge of the woods and disappeared into something that looked like it might have come from Aesop’s Fables.

Brad stopped at the entrance to the path and waited for her to catch up. The dogs ran ahead, barking excitedly. “I keep the path pretty clear, but you’ll need to keep an eye out for tree roots and fallen branches. Just stay close to me and I’ll make sure you don’t take a header down the hill.”

Bliss laughed, lifting a heavy, unattractive shoe off the ground. “I’m wearing Humvees on my feet, I’m fairly confident I can handle this path. If nothing else they’ll keep me upright, like a bop bag.”

“Don’t make fun of my Tractor King rubber specials. You can hike, swim, and excavate diamond mines in those shoes.”

Bliss laughed, entering the path at his side. “Unfortunately, what you can’t do is look fashionable in them.”

Brad shrugged. “Who needs fashion when you have function?”

“Me. I need fashion, Brad. You might as well know that about me right now.” She stopped and gave him an earnest look. “Since you shared your completely embarrassing obsession for small, hairy creatures with me tonight, you might as well know my worst too. I make it a point to never look less than perfectly pulled together. My nails are sacred sculptures, I’m passionate about shoes to a fault, and my clothes take up half of my twelve hundred square foot apartment. I worship at the altar of looking pretty and abhor dirt and bugs of every kind. Most importantly, I resist fresh air and wide open spaces at all costs. I’m the consummate city mouse.”

“Even a city mouse takes a vacation to the country now and then.” His warm breath, still spicy with the remnants of dinner, slid across her face, making her belly clench low and hard.

Bliss blinked. When had he moved so close? And why didn’t she step away? “Not…” She took a deep breath as his hand found the skin of her arm. “Not this city mouse.”

He lowered his head, moving his lips a whisper away from hers. “And yet…here you are.” The touch of his lips against hers was explosive. Bliss’ body fell into him of its own accord. She seemed to have no control over her hips as they folded toward his under slight pressure from the large hand in the small of her back.

The night buzzed with the sound of insects and the rustle of nocturnal creatures. In the near distance, Brad’s dogs barked and plunged happily through the tall grass and weeds between the trees. A soft breeze picked up, rustling through Bliss’ hair, which was now mostly dog spit free thanks a few minutes spent in front of the bathroom mirror.

She didn’t notice any of it. Her whole essence, her every thought and sensation, were tied up in the man in her arms.

His scent, the feel of his heated skin beneath her questing fingers, the sound of his heart beating against hers…all those things encompassed her, drowning out the rest.

He turned his head slightly and deepened the kiss, pulling the very air from her lungs. She felt a moan bubbling up as his hands skimmed over her back, rubbing it in gentle, sensual circles that made something low in her body tighten with need.

Bliss slipped her fingers through his hair, so soft, like silk against her fingers, and fought to get closer to him. She wanted to touch every inch of his long, lean body with hers, wanted so much to grind herself against the hard ridge she could feel beneath his jeans, lose herself in the feel of him…his incredible scent…but something was in the way.

Something that was starting to wriggle and give off tiny little squeaks of alarm. Sissy!
